The question of how much weekly mileage for marathon training is rarely answered by a single number. A runner completing their first marathon in five hours and an athlete targeting 2:45 may both be training for 26.2 miles, but their current conditioning, recovery capacity and required race pace are completely different. The right mileage is the highest volume you can absorb consistently while still completing the work that makes you marathon-ready.
For some runners, that is 35 miles per week. For others, it is 70-plus. The mistake is not choosing a number at either end of that range. The mistake is copying a number that does not match your training history.
How Much Weekly Mileage for Marathon Goals?
For a healthy runner with a sensible build-up, these ranges provide a useful starting framework:

These are not entry requirements. They are context. A runner who has built steadily over several years may race well from 45 miles per week, while another athlete needs 65 miles to develop enough aerobic resilience. The more ambitious the target, the less room there is for irregular training. Marathon performance is built by accumulating aerobic work over months, not by forcing two heroic 20-mile runs into a short training block.
Start With Your Current Mileage, Not Your Ideal Mileage
Your existing average is the most useful place to begin. If you have averaged 25 miles per week for the last eight weeks, jumping immediately to 45 because a plan says so is not marathon preparation. It is a risk calculation that usually ends with a calf, Achilles or hamstring issue.
Look at your last six to eight weeks and identify the mileage you have actually completed, not the mileage you intended to run. That average is your base. From there, build patiently, with easier consolidation weeks included before fatigue becomes a problem.
A runner currently averaging 20 miles per week might need several months before a 40-mile peak is appropriate. An experienced club runner already holding 45 miles per week can often prepare for a marathon by extending that base gradually and making the training more specific. Neither approach is better. They simply reflect different starting points.
A good rule is that marathon training should feel like a progression from your normal running life, not a complete shock to it. If every week feels difficult to survive, the volume is ahead of your fitness.
Peak Mileage Matters Less Than Consistent Mileage
Many runners become fixated on one peak week. They want to know whether 50, 60 or 70 miles is the magic number. It is not. Eight to twelve consistent weeks at a well-managed volume will usually produce more than one huge week followed by illness, injury or missed sessions.
Consider two runners. One averages 42 miles per week for three months, completing a long run, one threshold session and enough easy running to recover. The other hits 60 miles once, then repeatedly drops to 25 to manage soreness. The first runner has built a far stronger marathon platform.
This is where disciplined planning wins. Mileage only works when it is repeatable. Your training log should show gradual development, not sharp peaks and collapses.
The Long Run Is Important, but It Cannot Carry the Whole Plan
The long run is the most obvious marathon session, but it should not make up an excessive share of your weekly total. If your long run is 20 miles in a 35-mile week, recovery will dominate the days around it and your overall training quality may suffer.
For most runners, a long run of roughly 25 to 35 per cent of weekly mileage is a more sustainable guide. That may mean building weekly volume before pushing the long run further. It also creates room for easy aerobic running, marathon-pace work and threshold training.
The exact long-run distance depends on pace and experience. A three-hour runner may cover 20 miles with less muscular damage than a five-hour runner covering the same distance. Time on feet matters. A long run that requires three and a half hours may need a different recovery strategy than one completed in two hours.
Easy Mileage Creates the Capacity for Quality Sessions
Marathon runners often under-value easy running because it does not look impressive on a watch. Yet easy mileage is where much of the aerobic development happens. It improves your ability to use fat efficiently, strengthens connective tissue, develops capillary density and lets you tolerate more training without turning every run into a test.
If adding mileage causes your easy pace to become harder, your heart rate to drift unusually high or your legs to stay heavy for days, the increase may be too aggressive. More miles are only useful when they remain mostly aerobic.
That does not mean marathon training should be slow all the time. Specific work matters: threshold sessions improve sustainable speed, marathon-pace running develops efficiency at race effort, and occasional faster running maintains mechanics. But quality sessions need a base beneath them. Trying to compensate for low mileage by making every run hard is one of the quickest ways to stagnate or get injured.
Use Testing and Recovery Signals to Set the Right Volume
Weekly mileage should be informed by physiology, not just motivation. Heart-rate data can show whether your easy running is genuinely easy. Lactate testing can identify training zones more accurately than estimated percentages, helping you avoid accumulating fatigue in the grey area between easy and threshold work.
Pay attention to the practical signals as well. Persistent changes in resting heart rate, poor sleep, declining appetite, unusually sore calves, repeated niggles or an inability to complete normal easy runs all deserve attention. They do not always mean you must stop, but they may mean holding mileage steady rather than progressing.
For runners returning from an Achilles, calf or hamstring problem, frequency can be safer than adding a large single run. Four or five shorter easy runs may be easier to tolerate than cramming the same volume into three outings. The right structure depends on injury history and how your body responds the following day.
Match Mileage to Your Race Target Honestly
Your marathon target should be supported by evidence from training and recent race performances. If your half marathon, threshold pace and weekly volume all point towards a particular range, respect that information. A finish-time goal is not made realistic by writing it on a race entry form.
